Hi, I'm Darren Lekkerkerker, Fidelity Portfolio Manager.
[00:00:07.073]
I'm excited to be here. I'm positive heading into markets into 2026.
[00:00:12.112]
Last year in 2025, we ended the year with a
[00:00:16.483]
stable and low economic growth, double-digit earnings growth, and positive
[00:00:20.787]
markets. I think into 2026, I see a lot of these trends
[00:00:24.824]
continuing in terms of the economy.
[00:00:27.494]
We see both monetary support in terms of like lower
[00:00:32.298]
rates in terms of both sides of the border in the U.S. and Canada,
[00:00:36.736]
and fiscal stimulus in the U.S., which should support both consumers and
[00:00:40.473]
businesses, lower gasoline prices, which help consumers.
[00:00:44.778]
So a lot of positive trends.
[00:00:46.813]
Last year, we saw a transition from the market being led by
[00:00:50.917]
technology and the AI beneficiaries
[00:00:55.221]
to broader market, where we're seeing early cyclical sectors do well,
[00:00:59.726]
such as consumer discretionary, financials, industrials.
[00:01:03.063]
Also resources,
[00:01:05.031]
these are a lot of areas that I continue to like for a
[00:01:08.968]
positive investment into 2026.
[00:01:13.373]
For the Fidelity American Equity Fund, I will manage the fund
[00:01:17.544]
in a materially similar way to I have managed Fidelity North American Equity
[00:01:21.681]
Fund over the last 10 years.
[00:01:23.616]
My plan is to achieve
[00:01:25.285]
above average, absolute and relative fund performance.
[00:01:30.010]
In terms of what I'm looking for, I look for high quality businesses,
[00:01:34.010]
I plan to have a concentrated portfolio of these companies and
[00:01:39.010]
I'm looking for three things when I evaluate a business.
[00:01:41.250]
One, what's the quality of the business franchise?
[00:01:44.010]
Does it have a competitive advantage that's durable?
[00:01:48.000]
Can we evaluate this through high return on invested capital or rising return on invested capitol?
[00:01:55.010]
Two, management. We interview all of the management teams
[00:01:59.000]
before and regularly during our investment period.
[00:02:02.000]
Does management have a lot of skin in the game? Do they own a lot stock?
[00:02:04.691]
Do they act and care about the same things as us as shareholders?
[00:02:09.010]
Two, what do they do in terms of capital allocation?
[00:02:12.500]
Can we expect their capital allocation to be accretive to us as shareholder over time?
[00:02:17.010]
And three, do they have a track record of execution?
[00:02:20.500]
Thirdly, I look at valuation. Is now the right time to own this company?
[00:02:25.000]
What's the free cashflow yield
[00:02:28.214]
and how do we think that will trend over time?
[00:02:30.990]
