What is a podcast and how do you use it?

A podcast is a way to receive audio and video files directly on your desktop through a podcasting application such as iTunes. The files can then be watched on your computer or loaded on to your portable media player (such as an iPod) for you to watch later.

Podcasting differs from downloading files in that you are subscribing to automatically receive episodes – thereby receiving multiple files, usually at a consistent interval (i.e., weekly, monthly); like watching a television series instead of a single episode.

To get started all you need to do is download the free podcasting software. Some options include:

There are many other free tools.

Common misconceptions:

Podcasts are only for iPods
You can use your computer and any portable media player that's compatible with the audio or video file you're downloading.

Podcasts are audio-only
Primarily, podcasts are audio or video feeds. However, they can also be in text formats such as PDF.

  3. Open iTunes
  4. In iTunes, go to “Advanced”
